Chickens, ducklings, and a dog…

Another icky day out. Really, really need the sun to come back, which is forecasted for Monday. Rainy weekends are the worst for us. People are home on weekends, or at least more so than during the week, so its the best time to be out hitting curbs. Oh well. It will happen. Its just frustrating.
I’m chickens, ducklings, and dog sitting through Monday or Tuesday for an amazing friend. She got a gig out of state. This friend is one of the few people I know that is going at least as hard as I am, and she possesses a heart of the purest gold ever known.
So, I headed over to her place first thing this morning to let the girls out, move the ducklings back outside, and let the Boomer dog out. Boom-Boom loves me. He reminds me of my Achilles, only older.
The chickens and roosters were happy to see me. Their excitement has everything to do with the good and fresh water I’ll be providing and literally nothing to do with me. That’s ok. I still think they are adorable (yes. I said adorable).
There is a large main coop, one smaller, and two hoop coops. In one of the hoop coops, there are done babies and they look like little eagles to me. So cute. Anyway, one was being all sleepy and uninterested last night. I didn’t think anything of it since there are some that are early bedtimers. When I went in this morning, it was dead. I started crying immediately. Dead animals always make me sad, and thus was a baby.
I checked its little, stiff body all over for wounds. None. A patch of feathers about the size of a half dollar were missing from is chest, but no wound or visible trauma. No holes in the fencing so not a predator. My friend says sometimes it just happens that way. So sad.
Everyone else was fine. There is one of the baby eagle looking chickens I’m a little concerned about, but that’s probably my over-active inner animal mommy kicking in. I’ll see when I head over there tonight.
Collected 3 eggs this morning. The daily egg count usually varies between 23-35, so I’m sure I’ll have a bunch of eggs to grab later. The cluck-clucks don’t usually head into the coop until around dusk, which is around 9 these days, so I’ll get home about 9:30-10 tonight.
Do any of my readers/followers have chickens? What type?

I love chickens, I have about 30 now. they are Road island reds and they are free range. 3 of my hens now have chicks 2 of them have 6 and 1 has 4.

    • Sorry it took me so long to get to this comment!! Busy busy the last few days. Reds are adorable!! My friend has a few Reds, along with a bunch of other types. I think her count is up to 40+ and she has 44 eggs in the incubator!! I never really liked chickens before I got to know hers. It wasn’t that I didn’t like them, I was pretty much indifferent to them. I have grown to be quite fond of them.
